Sonia Randhawa


About me

Sonia is interested in issues relating to media freedom, freedom of expression and freedom of information, particularly how the information needs of marginalised groups can be met. She does occasional work with, and is a member of the feminist media organisation ISIS International, based in Manila. She is a director for the Centre for Independent Journalism, Malaysia and a PhD candidate in history and law at the University of Melbourne, examining the role of Malay-language women journalists played in the dual processes of neoliberalism and Islamization in Malaysia during the 1990s. Her academic work draws on cultural studies and in particular feminist media studies, and she has published on issues relating to ICT and gender in Malaysia, freedoms of expression and information and access to environmental information.
