Dear friends,

It is an honour to be here and to speak on this panel.

I would like to talk about geographies of the network society that are excluded – geographies typically characterised as 'bottom of the pyramid' by non-inhabitants – geographies that are home to those who we are told are waiting to be empowered by the telecoms.

These are communities in the margins, who matter all too little to the networks of value.

IAMCR's 2014 took place in Hyderabad, India from 15th-19th July. The conference theme was Region as Frame: Politics, Presence, Practice. Anita Gurumurthy was invited to be a part of the panel on 'Governing Digital Spaces: Issues of Access, Freedom and Privacy'.

Anita Gurumurthy represented IT for Change at the International Conference on “Labouring Women: Some Major Concerns at the Current Juncture” organised by the Centre for Informal Sector and Labour Studies, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi from 31st July to 1st August, 2014.

In September 2014, IT for Change and International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada, co-organised a Round Table in Bengaluru titled 'Inclusion in the network society – mapping development alternatives, forging research agendas'. The Round Table brought together leading scholars, development practitioners and thinkers, interested in the theoretical and policy aspects of equity, inclusion and participation in the 'ICTs and development' domain.

 

Anita Gurumurthy participated in a panel arranged by UN Women on Gender and Infrastructure during the 8th Annual Conference on Public Policy and Management organized by the Center for Public Policy, at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore in August 13, 2013. She made a presentation on 'ICTs as Infrastructure- Explorations through a gendered prism'.

NGO – in Special Consultative Status with UN ECOSOC

IT for Change has been a regular participant in the annual Internet Governance Forum (IGF) meetings. Parminder attended the latest Internet Governance Forum in Baku, Azebaijan from 6th to 9th November, 2012, and its connected pre-events on 3rd to 5th of November.

At the World Summit on Information Society + 10 Review,  Anita Gurumurthy delivered a speech as civil society representative, at the closing ceremony.

Nandini.C represented IT for Change on the Panel 'Framing Development Justice' at the 2013 Asia Pacific Regional Consultation with Special Procedures Mandate Holders organised by APWLD, between October 27-29 2013 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. first South Asia Ministerial ITfC participated in the the first South Asia Ministerial Forum (CLICK FOR PROGRAMME AGENDA) in New Delhi on 11-12 Feb 2013. The SAMF organised by UNESCO New Delhi, MHRD and Intel saw the participation of Education Ministers from all the SAARC countries including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka as well as Minster of State from MHRD and Rajasthan and Haryana.
