AfriSIG 2025 took place from 23 to 28 May in Dar es Salaam, ahead of the African IGF (29–31 May). Convened by APC, the African Union Commission (AUC), and Research ICT Africa (RIA), in collaboration with UNECA and the UN IGF Parliamentary Track, the five-day residential program brought together participants from across the continent to engage with key issues in internet and digital governance.

The program covered topics such as digital inclusion, cybersecurity, data governance, AI, content regulation, and emerging global processes including WSIS+20 and the Global Digital Compact.

Session 3, held on 24 May, focused on the Global Digital Compact and the CSTD Working Group on Data Governance at All Levels (WGDG). The session featured inputs from Paula Martins, Mpho Moyo, and online contributions from Peter Major (WGDG Chair), Anita Gurumurthy (IT for Change), and Mohamed Farahat.

Anita Gurumurthy, as a member of the WGDG, shared insights on how global trade, IP, and tax regimes shape data governance, often to the disadvantage of African and other developing countries. She stressed the need for structural reform and equitable global digital governance frameworks.
