Research Associate - Gender and Digital Economy

Location: Bengaluru  

IT for Change is looking to recruit a researcher with a track record and keen interest in labor market analysis and technological change, as well as a penchant for exploring and developing digital enterprise models that are community centric. Research Associate - Gender and Digital Economy

This is for our inclusive platform models track, through which we examine the future-of-work question for social enterprises, farmers, informal workers, etc. The ideal candidate will have experience with published research, a flair for writing (academic and non-academic), comfort with working in interdisciplinary teams, and a political economy orientation towards understanding issues of gender in the digital economy.

Interested applicants must have:

  • A Masters' degree including but not limited to, development studies, public policy, economics, gender studies, political economy studies, and other allied degrees

  • 5 years of demonstrable research experience

  • Experience in working on social and economic justice issues in the digital/platform economy using intersectional approaches that integrate development theories, critical gender studies, feminism, and other lines of inquiry

Communications Associate

Location: Bengaluru/Remote

  • We are looking for a Communications Associate to contribute strategically to our organization's external communication initiatives and internal knowledge management processes. The ideal candidate should have a strong interest in digital and data rights and development justice, with the ability to translate complex research into accessible content for diverse audiences. The Communications Associate will be pivotal in shaping and implementing our communication strategy, working towards making our vision and mission resonate with various stakeholders. Preference will be given to candidates willing to move to Bengaluru, but possibilities for remote work can be negotiated.

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Communication: Develop and execute impactful visibility, dissemination, and communication strategies for active projects, networking, and advocacy efforts.
  2. Public-Facing Content: Guide the creation of newsletters, social media strategy, and other public-facing content to maximize impact.
  3. Content Review: Review, edit, and harmonize all public-facing content, including website/s, funder correspondence, concept notes, and reports.

Communications Assistant

We are seeking a dynamic Communications Associate/Assistant to join our communication team, contributing to the organization's external communications activities and internal knowledge management processes. The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in digital and data rights, as well as development justice. They should be adept at translating organizational research into accessible materials for public consumption.

The Communications Associate/ Assistant will play a supporting role in strategic communications, editorial responsibilities, and visual communications. Key responsibilities include facilitating the website migration process to the new IT for Change website and building community networks with other organizations in the Global South based on shared values.

We specifically encourage early career professionals to apply who can contribute to the overall operations of the communications team. Research Intern

Location: Bengaluru

We are looking for a research intern based out of Bengaluru to work with us on a research project on labour and platform cooperatives for a period of 6 weeks, starting immediately. This is a paid opportunity. 

Role and Responsibilities:

1. Translate one interview questionnaire from English to Kannada.

2. Conduct in-depth interviews with 50 Kannada speaking women working in the beauty and salon sector 3. Translate and transcribe all interviews verbatim, from Kannada to English.

Skills and Experience of the Candidate:

1.Bachelors or Masters degree in a social sciences discipline e.g. labor relations, economics, sociology, anthropology, literature, and other related streams (we invite applications from candidates currently pursuing their degrees as well).

Senior Researcher - Inclusive Platform Models

Location: Bengaluru

IT for Change is looking to recruit a researcher with a keen interest in techno-design and a penchant for exploring and developing alternative digital enterprise models with communities and social enterprises. This is for our inclusive platform models track through which we examine the future-of-work question for groups such as MSMEs, farmers, informal workers, etc. The ideal candidate will have about 5-7 years of experience with published research, a flair for writing (academic and non-academic), demonstrated track record in leading teams/ supervisory roles, comfort with working in interdisciplinary teams, and a political economy orientation towards understanding issues of gender in the digital economy.

Research Associate – Labor (full-time)

Location: Bengaluru

IT for Change is looking to hire a Researcher to undertake our engagements and projects around issues of platform workers and other digitalization-related labor concerns.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Supporting research on emerging challenges of labor in relation to digitalization
  • Tracking changes and updates on the national and global policy arenas around labor
  • Assisting with organizing sessions, campaigns, and attending/presenting at national and international advocacy events
  • Developing written outputs from research initiatives, including reports, academic articles, media pieces, and explainers
  • Enabling the execution of capacity-building initiatives, even in local languages (knowledge of Kannada/Tamil/Hindi preferred)

IT for Change’s education team is on the lookout for teachers having the ambition to bring about systemic change in the quality of education offered in government and aided schools in India. We are looking for teacher-educators with prior work experience of 2+ years in the fields of Mathematics or Science or Kannada or Social Science.

Job Profile:

  • Develop digital curricular resources in Mathematics, Science, English, Kannada, and Social Science.
  • Design and conduct professional development programs for school teachers and teacher-educators, as part of IT for Change’s education team.
  • Visit schools regularly to assist teachers in integrating new pedagogies in the classroom. This will involve developing lesson plans, transacting, and documentation.
  • Explore ICT integration in Mathematics and language teaching, including educational software tools.
  • Contribute to building subject-teacher networks within districts and across the state of Karnataka and other states in India.

Desired Qualifications and Skills:

  • Minimum 2 years of school-teaching experience in Science or Kannada.

Policy Researcher - Gender and Digital Economy

This track focuses on questions of labor, gender, data, and technology in the digital economy with a focus on economic and social policy. Changing macroeconomic conditions, labor market dynamics, gender relations, and gender-responsive governance of data and the digital economy are the core areas of inquiries in this track. Expertise in macro-economic policy, labor, and gender, and handling of quantitative data is highly desirable.

Finance, Accounts and Administration Officer

Location: Bengaluru, Karnataka

Job summary

Key member of the team responsible for finance, accounting, and office administration activities. The position will be part of the management of the organization and the person will report to the Senior Finance, Accounts, and Administration Officer. The person will participate in and direct the following activities personally or through the four-member accounts and administration team, under the guidance of the Senior Finance, Accounts, and Administration Officer.

Accounting and Finance

    • Participate in developing and implementing goals, policies, and procedures relating to financial management and accounting
    • Prepare organizational and project budgets, monitor expenses with respect to budgets, and perform variance analysis and cost control
    • Record financial transactions in the books of accounts, maintained by project and cost centers
    • Maintain staff payroll, receivables, and payables
    • Perform funds planning and cash flows, including liaison with banks

About Just Net Coalition (JNC)

Just Net Coalition (JNC) is a global network of civil society actors committed to an open, free, just and equitable Internet. Founded in February 2014, the coalition engages on topics of the internet and its governance, with the goal to promote democracy, human rights, and social justice. IT for Change serves as the secretariat of JNC. 

JNC, through its coalition members and allies, is currently engaged in a process of driving systematic development of digital governance perspectives in key sectors of development. Through deliberations and dialogue among civil society organizations and a bottom-up processes to map the key priorities for digital governance, we are working to shape our global advocacy agenda for the mid-term. 

We seek an Advocacy Associate to help steer this process by leading the community/coalition-building efforts of JNC with stakeholders in the digital justice space. The involves coordinating the global advocacy and research activities of the coalition, as well as taking on the challenge of scouting for and initiating new networking arenas and opportunities, widening the impact of the coalition’s work, and forging meaningful collaborations with diverse stakeholders.

Tech Policy Researcher

IT for Change is looking to recruit policy researchers with a technical background for its research and policy advocacy. We are looking for a candidate with a robust understanding of technology governance debates, especially the design and development of inclusive and accountable data and AI systems that further social policy objectives.

The Tech Policy Researcher will play an active role in two tracks:

  • Intelligent Infrastructures - Focusing on policy debates about platform, data, and AI governance in relation to emerging digital infrastructures underpinning the economy, society, and public administration.
  • Alternative Platform Models - Focusing on design and policy directions – techno-institutional norms, principles, and pathways – for non-extractivist platform infrastructures.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Providing research support on tech-design and regulation of digital infrastructures for research reports, blogs, advocacy statements, and organizational interventions in policy spaces.
  • Supporting the organization’s ongoing efforts with government agencies to develop innovative platform and data architectures for livelihood programs and social security schemes.

Senior Associate – Technology

Location: Bengaluru

We are looking for a senior, hands-on technology professional to join our team to support internal organizational requirements, explore and configure platforms relevant to communities, civil society organizations, as well as public systems and governments, to help achieve our vision of a just digital society.

Primary responsibilities:
- Providing technology leadership to the organization and team, along with other senior members.
- Co-managing the cloud infrastructure of IT for Change. This includes self-hosted applications for mail, CMS, LMS, MediaWiki, Moodle, project management, desktop publishing, multimedia, HR, and Financial Accounting etc.
- Customizing applications/CMS features for projects
- Undertaking research and development on platforms and tools and keeping organizational understanding at the cutting edge.
- Lending expertise to organizational media campaigns.
- Supporting implementation and configuration of applications and platforms for organizational partners.
- Assisting with advocacy events and attending/presenting at national and international advocacy events.
- Designing and implementing projects relating to digital (artificial) intelligence.
- Installing, configuring, using, and troubleshooting different software applications.

Interested candidates must have:
- A Masters or Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science or allied education.
- 5+ years of demonstrable, hands-on experience in digital technology life cycle, covering system architecture, design, development, and implementation.
- Excellent technical skills, specifically in developing technical architecture and design.
