India and the US are close to signing a limited trade deal that includes some key agricultural and dairy products, medical devices and some issues of digital trade. India hopes to secure a continuation of GSP concessions and a possible reversal of punitive tariff hikes by the US. However, a more ambitious Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is also being discussed between the two countries and talks may be launched soon.

This webinar was the second of a series on the proposed India-US trade deals, co-organized by IT for Change and Third World Network (TWN). The session discussed the implications of the deal for Indian farmers’ livelihoods and incomes as well as food security issues.

The speakers included:

  1. Devinder Sharma, Food and Trade Policy Analyst
  2. R.S. Sodhi, Managing Director, Amul
  3. Shalini Bhutani, Lawyer and Researcher
  4. S. Kannaiyan, General Secretary, South Indian Coordination Committee of Farmers’ Movements

The session was introduced by IT for Change's Parminder Jeet Singh and moderated by Ranja Sengupta from TWN.
