Anita Gurumurthy is part of a panel on Social Media, Networks, and Movements for Women's Empowerment on September 30, 2021 as part of the Gender and Digital Health Webinar Series co-organized by The Gender & Health Hub, UNU-IIGH, The University of Cape Town and BBC Media Action.
The Gender and Digital Health Webinar Series is a platform to foster new partnerships and co-create knowledge on the gendered dimensions of digital technologies for health, with a focus on the translation of evidence to policy and practice-based learning in low and middle-income countries. The series is organized by a consortium between United Nations University International Institute for Global Health, The University of Cape Town, and BBC Media Action.
India is one of the largest social media markets in the world, but just 9% of Twitter users are women, in light of this fact, the panel will be discussing:
- What does this mean for development sector efforts to use social media for social impact, including improving women’s health?
- Are offline gender norms perpetuated online, and if yes, how do online gender norms shape women’s usage of social media?
- What is the relationship between digital literacy and women’s empowerment?
- How are women’s empowerment collectives using social media to increase government accountability and improve the delivery of public services in India?
