Anita Gurumurthy was invited to take part in a workshop on ‘Social and Solidarity Economy for Advancing the Sustainable Development Goals in Asia’ organized by the International Labour Organization from 18-19 June 2024.

Anita participated in a panel on ‘Social and Solidarity Economy and Workers' Rights and Conditions in Digital Labour Platforms.’

The panel aimed to explore how social and solidarity economy entities leverage the potential of the platform economy to build a fair, inclusive workplace where workers' voices and rights are respected and upheld. Examples of platform cooperatives, democratically owned and governed digital platforms in the region were featured.

Anita highlighted insights derived from ongoing research at three IT for Change project partner sites, focusing on inclusive platform models benefiting women farmers and informal economy workers. Emphasizing the ideological alignment between social solidarity economies and cooperativism, Anita honed in on how the platform experiments by these partners exemplify principles such as democratic control, economic participation, and community commitment. The panel was moderated by Phu Huynh, Specialist, Employment DWT-Bangkok. Besides Anita, Akkanut Wantanasombut, Founder of Tamsang-Tamsong; and Heira Hardiyanti, Founder of MyCoolClass platform cooperative took part in the discussion.
