Nandini Chami was invited to speak at a session on ‘Breaking the Crucial Barriers in Global AI Governance’ at the UN Science Summit on 10 September 2024.
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to shape the future, establishing a comprehensive global governance framework is more critical than ever. However, this effort faces three major challenges:
1. Lack of a unified global authority to evaluate AI systems' impacts and guide their future development from an interdisciplinary perspective;
2. Significant differences in AI development and deployment persist, especially between the global north and south; and
3. Inadequate stakeholder involvement, where the top-down approach to AI governance often overlooks the voices of diverse stakeholders, including everyday users and marginalized groups.
To discuss these challenges, the session brought together experts from various disciplines, regions, and industries. In particular, Nandini spoke on the multilateral approaches to AI governance, highlighting the gaps in current frameworks.
Besides, Nandini, Rostam J. Neuwirth, Head, Dept. of Global Legal Studies, Macau University; and Hong Shen, Assistant Research Professor, Carnegie Mellon University took part in the event.
