Merrin Muhammed Ashraf presented a case study report titled 'Intersectional Frames in Digitalisation Research: Revisiting a Study by IT for Change about Misogynistic Trolling Online' at a hybrid workshop on Promoting Intersectional Development Research, organized by the Southern Centre for Inequality Studies, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg on 16th-17 October 2024.
The case study report documented the application of intersectionality at various stages of IT for Change's research on abuse and misogynist trolling on Twitter. The report was authored by Anita Gurumurthy, Merrin Muhammed Ashraf, and Malavika Rajkumar as part of a research initiative, ‘Promoting Intersectional Development Research’ – a joint project between the Southern Centre for Inequality Studies (SCIS) and Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC). The objective of this project is to understand, inform, and promote intersectional approaches to development research across different program initiatives of the IDRC. The workshop marked the conclusion of the Promoting Intersectional Development Research Project which began in 2023 and aimed to bring together funders, researchers, and organizations from the Global South to discuss the potential opportunities and/or challenges that intersectionality presents for addressing persistent inequalities around the world.
