Our Director and Lead (Education and Technology), Gurumurthy Kasinathan, participated in a hybrid webinar titled 'Generative AI in the Classroom – Possibilities and Perils: A View from Singapore,’ co-hosted by IT for Change, Vakkom Moulavi Foundation Trust (VMFT), and the Comparative Education Society of India (CESI). The event was conducted online and in Thiruvanathapuram, India on 9 November 2024.
Dr. Fei Victor Lim, Associate Professor and Deputy Head (Research), National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore spoke about Generative Al tools, like ChatGPT and Gemini, offering new possibilities for teaching and learning and how teachers can design meaningful learning experiences, harness their potential, and address the challenges they pose. Singapore's response to these powerful technologies and key aspects of the Ministry of Education's EdTech Masterplan 2030 were also presented.
The talk was followed by a discussion moderated by Dr. Sajitha Bashir, Executive Vice-Chairperson, VMFT & Former Education Manager, World Bank and Gurumurthy Kasinathan. Gurumurthy spoke about the vulnerabilities that proprietary AI poses and the need to develop alternate AI models that are truly public and open. With over 100 participants, the event was attended in person by teachers and educators in Kerala.
