The Global Digital Justice Forum (GDJF) welcomes and commends the recent joint statement issued on 26 February by the Presidents of Chile, Spain, Brazil, Colombia, and Uruguay, titled ‘Commitment to Democracy and Global Governance’. This landmark declaration recognizes the urgent need for “joint actions to address inequality, disinformation and the malicious use of social networks and other digital technologies that fuel extremism and polarisation of our societies”.
The GDJF’s recent call to action, ‘Now is the time to take action for digital justice,‘ endorsed by more than fifty civil society organizations worldwide, aligns closely with the priorities outlined in the 26 February statement. In our statement, we decry the tightening stranglehold of political and corporate authoritarianism on the internet and envisage a future where technology is harnessed to empower people and protect the planet.
We sincerely hope that this initiative of the Presidents of Chile, Spain, Brazil, Colombia, and Uruguay will overcome the many challenges ahead, as it is vital to securing the future of democracy. GDJF hopes that our research and campaigning for digital justice can contribute to its objectives.
