Bridging Divides, Dismantling Power Structures! Linking Feminist Development Policy and Digital Transformation

This study was conducted by betterplace lab, and commissioned by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The study outlines the challenges, needs, and potential vis-à-vis feminist development policy in order to achieve a gender-just digital transformation, while providing an outlook on the access, use, and design of digital technologies. In recommendations for action, it explains how a ‘3R approach’ can strengthen and promote the rights, resources, and representation of women and girls in all their diversity as well as marginalized groups.

IT for Change’s Anita Gurumurthy and Nandini Chami contributed to this study. Their input can be found in the chapter titled, ‘Towards Transformation: Unpacking Power, Dismantling Unequal Structures.’ Their input focuses on digital economics and they argue that simply adding more women into a system that is deeply flawed will only entrench the status quo and its neo-colonial impulses.
