Transnational Institute (TNI)
Anita Gurumurthy was a participant at a 'strategic futures' workshop organized by the Transnational Institute (TNI) to discuss some of the key challenges social movements will need to confront in the next decade.
The subject of the presentation was 'Surveillance Capitalism and Digital Futures'. We are in the age of surveillance capitalism where Big Tech companies are seeking to control and monetise all aspects of life (our bodies, our feelings, our behaviour). The latest WTO trade agenda will reinforce the power of an unregulated tech industry. Since 9/11, the shift towards states surveiling peoples and restricting civil liberties has been constant. There are enormous implications for social control and political manipulation. How do we defend privacy, the freedom of the internet, and build democracy in a digital age? Anita's presentation sought to unpack these questions.
The event was chaired by TNI's Nick Buxton while the other speakers included TNI Fellow Ben Hayes and P2P Foundation's Stacco Troncoso.
