Comments from IT for Change, India to Article 19's Public Consultation on Principles of Privacy and Freedom of Expression

Article 19 called for a public consultation on Principles on Privacy and Freedom of Expression. IT for Change submitted comments to the Draft Principles. Our inputs emphasized: the need to re-formulate the concept of personal data in times of Big Data analysis, algorithms and interlinking of databases; safeguards to protect privacy: in pervasive communication surveillance regimes, while providing access to sensitive data for academic or journalistic purposes, while sharing public records on children; primacy of courts over self regulatory mechanisms to redress privacy violations
