IT for Change will co-host a webinar with Public Services International (PSI) titled 'Covid and Free Trade: Workers Countering Big-Tech in the Post-Covid Era' .

While the Covid-19 pandemic has led to an unprecedented health crisis and is predicted to have devastating economic impacts, technology giants such as Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Apple are thriving. Control over data and digital intelligence will be the key ingredient of power in the emerging digital society, increasingly shaping the global economic, social and political order in the post-Covid new economic order. As tech giants emerge as the undisputed winners of the Covid-19 crisis, they continue to use free trade agreements to protect themselves from regulation. This webinar will address these issues from the perspective of their implications for workers.

The speakers at this webinar include:

  1. Kate Lappin, Public Services International Asia Pacific, on digital governance and public service workers
  2. Uma Rani, International Labour Organisation, Switzerland, on labour rights and the power of Big Tech
  3. Parminder Jeet Singh, IT for Change, India, on economic rights in a data-based society
  4. Jane Kelsey, University of Auckland, New Zealand, on digital trade rules: surrendering public good to private players

The discussion will be moderated by Malou Mangahas, Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism.
