IT for Change's research and advocacy track on labor aims to consider the emergent challenges for workers and laborers in the digital economy, and build a new frontier of labor rights for the 21st century. Our work is primarily concerned with the working conditions of and social security for gig workers, the moral and legal responsibilities of platforms, and workers’ privacy and data rights.

Joint Statement Demanding that Labor Laws Must Recognize Platform Workers' Rights

September 2020: In light of the Indian Parliament sidestepping platform workers in the Code on Social Security, 2020, passed during the Monsoon Session of the Parliament, IT for Change co-drafted and signed a statement, with an alliance of trade unions and civil society organizations. The statement emphasized the urgent need to transpose existing labor rights and welfare mechanisms to the platform economy due to the bleak economic landscape and the prevailing labor market informality of contemporary times.

The article explores the issues faced by platform workers in a rapidly digitalizing economy and lays down short- and long-term agendas for ensuring workers' data rights in India.
