The Tech and Policy Lab of the University of Western Australia organized a ‘Tech Crimes Summit’ on July 17-18, 2023 at Perth. The two-day summit convened lawyers, researchers, academicians, and technologists to investigate criminal law as a tool for tackling Big Tech misconduct.
Anita Gurumurthy was a speaker in the session that explored what tech crimes offer beyond the typical online safety/digital harms approach, and how it adds from a feminist, abolitionist, and international perspective. Nandini Chami spoke in the session that asked about the future of digital society that we want to see, and how tech crimes fit into this vision and the overall strategy to achieve it. In the final session of the summit, Merrin Muhammed Ashraf spoke to the questions of where, how, and why tech crimes work and don’t work in pinning accountability on Big Tech for their misconduct that endangers the rights of people and nature.
