UNESCO and the Government of Nepal
Malavika Rajkumar participated in a workshop titled, ‘The Governance of Digital Platforms: Emerging Trends & Good Practices,’ in Kathmandu, Nepal on 14 September 2024. The workshop was organized by UNESCO in collaboration with Nepal's Federal Parliament.
Nepal's media landscape is rapidly evolving, with social media playing a dominant role among its 13.5 million active users, representing nearly 90% of those with internet access. The growing adoption of social media in the country highlights the need for robust governance frameworks to address challenges like content moderation, misinformation, and human rights concerns online.
In 2023, UNESCO launched the ‘Guidelines for the Governance of Digital Platforms,’ developed with input from 134 countries, including Nepal. To support the implementation of these guidelines, UNESCO hosted this workshop for Nepalese regulatory authorities. The workshop explored best practices for platform governance and provided a space for multi-stakeholder dialogue, addressing Nepal’s unique context. Insights from the event will contribute to national, regional, and global strategies.
