Ranjitha Kumar was invited to speak at a workshop on 'Examining Approaches to Worker Led Governance of Data and AI Technologies', organized by CIFAR on 17 August 2023. Speaking under the thematic session ‘Designing for Uncertainty and Change’, Ranjitha presented IT for Change's ongoing work with SEWA Cooperative Federation on designing alternative platform models that are gender-responsive, as a part of the Re-wiring India's Digitalising Economy for Women's Rights and Well-being project. Elucidating the need for developing participatory methods and approaches for building platforms, the presentation highlighted the ways in which techno-institutional design are to be informed by socio-economic narratives, and the unique challenges of establishing sustainable data cooperatives within the Global South.
