Mainstream AI models reflect patriarchal power structures rather than enabling feminist futures. Building feminist AI, therefore, is not just about creating representative or fair AI applications, but radically transforming AI innovation trajectories for structural justice.
Against this backdrop, IT for Change is pleased to announce a new collaboration titled “Building Feminist AI Futures in South and Southeast Asia”. This collaboration is part of our work as the knowledge hub that is providing expertise and support to the Inclusive AI Research Network (IARN) and aims to catalyze research and technological innovation for the creation of feminist AI tools and governance approaches. It advances feminist AI futures through a three-pronged strategy:
Component 1: The FemFirst Lab supports prototype development of feminist AI solutions
Component 2: The FemFirst Research Observatory produces evidence for feminist AI governance
Component 3: The Scholars Research Exchange fosters a space for interdisciplinary dialogue between the FemFirst Research Observatory and FemFirst Lab participants — bringing together researchers, creators, technologists, scholars, and innovators.
Through these components, the collaboration will identify and operationalize the building blocks of gender-transformative feminist AI innovation.
